Immigration bill is big concern for agriculture industry

WASHINGTON (AP) - The agriculture industry fears a disaster is on the horizon if the one bit of new immigration policy that Congress seems to agree on becomes law.

It's a plan to require that all American businesses run their employees through a program that confirms each worker is legally entitled to work in the U.S.

The program, known as E-Verify, could wreak havoc on an industry where 80 percent of the field workers are illegal immigrants.

So could the increased paperwork audits already under way by the Obama administration.

Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California says farmers are worried that their work force is about to disappear.

They say they want to hire legal workers and U.S. citizens, but that it's nearly impossible, given the relatively low wages and back-breaking work.

'Wake Up Wednesday' rally at CSU Stanislaus May 11

TURLOCK - Students and staff will hold a rally at CSU Stanislaus on Wednesday, May 11 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the quad on campus, to bring awareness to severe budget cuts affecting the university. The group will also thank professors and show their appreciation in honor of "Day of the Teacher."

A massive pillow fight will be staged to symbolize waking up legislators and students fighting back, who are tired of public education taking such tremendous cuts. The Declaration to Defend Education, written by students from CSU Fullerton during their sit-in demonstration, will also be available.

The event is co-sponsored by Student CTA, ASI and The Warrior Street Team.

Bringing government to the people Feb. 24

TURLOCK - A sometimes tired and frustrated public now has hope that elected officials are listening to their voices. Stanislaus County Supervisor Vito Chiesa, District 2, will host "Turlock Government Night" on Thursday, Feb. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the War Memorial building in Turlock.

The event will be a town hall-style gathering of federal, state and local elected officials listening to the constituents they serve. Speakers at the event include Congressman Jeff Denham, State Senator Anthony Cannella and Assemblyman Bill Berryhill. Other locally elected officials will be on-hand staffing booths for the attendees to visit. This spectrum of government officials and agencies in one place at one time is a first-of-its-kind in the local area.

The War Memorial Building is located at 247 East Canal Drive.
