Kaepernick to make third straight start for 49ers

SANTA CLARA, CA - San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh announced Wednesday that Colin Kaepernick will make his third straight start at quarterback on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

Kaepernick, the 25-year-old from Turlock, has been impressive since taking over for Alex Smith, who suffered a concussion in a Nov. 11 tie against the Rams.

"We believe Colin has the hot hand, and we're going with Colin," Harbaugh said.

The second-year pro has thrown three touchdown passes and one interception over the last two games. Kaepernick also has a rushing score during that span.

Smith was cleared to play against the Saints this past Sunday, but Harbaugh decided to stick with Kaepernick.

The 49ers sit atop the NFC West with an 8-2-1 record.

Mother of Oakdale murder suspect speaks out

STOCKTON, CA - The mother of a 25-year-old man accused of shooting two people to death outside an Oakdale market claimed her son suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Ryan Mazzariello is suspected of killing a 15-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man Sunday night.  Detectives with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department still haven't released a motive for the violence.   His mother said there are two factors.

"He told me, over the last year, he had problems with gang- bangers, people in the neighborhood threatening him and other military," said the woman, who doesn't want her name disclosed.

She said her son told her shortly after the shootings, "Mom, I did a terrible thing."  She also said her son was capable of the violence after developing what she believes is PTSD after years in the National Guard.

Keyes man killed in hit and run

KEYES, CA - A Stanislaus County resident was killed in what authorities believe was a hit and run Thursday afternoon.

According to preliminary information, the victim, Stanley Roy Hyer, 53, jumped on his ATV to go after someone in a pick-up truck apparently dumping trash on Keyes Road east of Carpenter Road.

"My son was in the field, cutting some trees down, and he had a quad.  When he saw it, he took off down the road while trash was flying out of the trailer," said Norman Hyer, father of the victim.

Hyer was found on the ground with mortal injuries. The Modesto Bee reports the ATV was 30 yards away and undamaged.  His father figures his son took a shortcut to get in front of the vehicle and presumed the driver would stop.

"I know he was trying to stop the car.  They hit him and kept on going.  I don't know why people throw trash in the fields, then when they get caught, they do other stupid things," said Norman Hyer.

Turlock woman fired over threatening, racist Obama Facebook post

TURLOCK, CA (AP) - A California woman has been fired and reported to the Secret Service for her President Barack Obama racial slur and assassination comment on Facebook.

The Modesto Bee says 22-year-old Denise Helms of Turlock posted the inflammatory comments on the social media site shortly after the president's re-election on Tuesday.

She used the n-word in referring to Obama and wrote that maybe he will be assassinated this term. Helms then told a Sacramento TV station that she wouldn't mind a bit if someone assassinated Obama.

Helms was fired Thursday from her job at the Cold Stone Creamery store. Store director Chris Kegle says the comments are disgusting.

Secret Service Agent Scott Gillingham in Sacramento says the incident is being investigated. Threats against the president can lead to felony charges.
