Ceres mom gets 4 years for drowning death of son, 2

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - A Northern California mother has pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter for the death of her 2-year-old son, who drowned in the family's algae-covered swimming pool.

The Modesto Bee reports that Florcita Valdez of Ceres entered the plea Monday, and was sentenced to more than four years in prison.

Valdez, originally charged with murder, also pleaded no contest to child endangerment for not providing adequate care to her other, 9-year-old son when the drowning occurred.

Valdez said she was baking a cake inside the house when she realized her son was missing.

Stanislaus County prosecutors said Valdez had left the 2-year-old Aureliano without proper supervision, which ultimately led to his drowning.

Prosecutors dropped the rest of the charges as part of the plea agreement.

Turlock confident in native son Kaepernick, 49ers

TURLOCK, CA - No matter who you talk with in Turlock - his mother or high school football coach - they agree Colin Kaepernick deserves good things.

"When he comes back, he's the same guy," Pitman High School former football coach Brandon Harris said. "He says hi to the lunch lady and a freshman kid.  He was a great kid to teachers, and anyone on campus you talk with."

"He's just a real nice guy," mother Teresa Kaepernick said.

Colin Kaepernick was pushed into the limelight after he took over quarterbacking duties for the San Francisco 49ers about two-thirds through the season and helped keep them alive through the playoffs.

He was a second round pick by the 49ers two years ago and appeared headed for another season as a backup. However, when QB Alex Smith suffered a concussion, Kaepernick was called in to replaced him.

Federal unemployment benefits extended for 400K Californians

SACRAMENTO, CA - Federal unemployment extension checks for approximately 400,000 Californians will continue without any interruptions.

Congress and President Obama re-authorized the federal extension benefits program, meaning that unemployed Californians eligible for federal extension benefits can continue to claim them.

"Because this all was able to happen fairly quickly, we should be able to automatically work to reopen these claims for our customers who were collecting at the end of December, said Loree Levy with the California Employment Development Department (EDD). "Send those claim forms. They need to fill them out and send them back to us and there's really no need to contact the department. We are taking care of these things for them, restarting these federal extension payments pretty quickly, so they should be able to avoid any interruptions of these payments."

Search suspended for missing plane in Yosemite

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CA - Searches for a missing plane in Yosemite National Park have been called off after a week and a half.

The small plane, piloted by Nicol Wilson from the Santa Barbara area, was last detected on radar over the North Dome area of the park the afternoon of Dec. 17, according to park spokeswoman Kari Cobb.

Aerial and ground searches over approximately 8,000 linear miles have not revealed any sign of the aircraft or what happened to it, Cobb said.

Wilson was headed for the Mammoth Lakes Airport.

Approximately 60 personnel from the park, California Highway Patrol and Civil Air Patrol searched for the plane.

Cobb said another five feet of new snow in the park's higher elevations and strong winds had created very hazardous conditions for searching.

She said searchers will look for the aircraft again in the spring when weather and park conditions are more favorable.

Phone outage reported at Oakdale hospital

OAKDALE, CA - Callers to Oak Valley Hospital and associated health centers and physician offices were being asked to use an alternate number while phone, fax and Internet services were down.

Hospital spokesman Robert Shatswell said callers should use (209) 602-2578 and their call will be directed to the appropriate service area.

Communication services both outside and inside the hospital have been interrupted because two AT&T junction boxes near the Oak Valley Hospital District were vandalized, Shatswell said. The outage also affects Oak Valley Care Center, Oak Valley Community Health Center and surrounding doctors' offices.

AT&T crews were working to restore service. Meantime, cellphones were being used.

Oak Valley Hospital is located at 350 South Oak Avenue in Oakdale.

Official: No sign of missing plane over Yosemite yet

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CA - Searchers continue to look for a small plane last detected on radar over Yosemite National Park on Monday afternoon.

The aircraft was piloted by Nicol Wilson who was flying from Santa Barbara to Mammoth Lakes Airport, said Yosemite spokeswoman Kari Cobb. The plane was last observed flying near North Dome in the park.

Weather hampered search efforts Tuesday but Wednesday, a California Highway Patrol helicopter and Civil Air Patrol (CAP)flew over hundreds of miles over the roughly 600 square miles of the search area. Cobb said no sign of the plane has been found and more than a foot of new snow has fallen in the higher elevations.

She said the rugged terrain is inaccessible by foot but the aerial search was ongoing Thursday.

Cobb said approximately 60 personnel with the CHP, CAP and Yosemite's Search and Rescue teams were involved.

Service record of ex-Marine standing guard at school in question

HUGHSON, CA - Discrepancies have turned up in the service record between what a veteran standing guard outside a Hughson elementary school said and his U.S. Marine Corps official record.

Craig D. Pusley, 28, said he felt he had a responsibility to help protect Hughson Elementary School in light of the devastating Connecticut school shootings last week in which 20 schoolchildren and six staff were slain. So on Wednesday, dressed in full fatigues and combat boots but unarmed, Pusley said he would spend the next 30 days in front of the school to help protect it.
