TURLOCK - A man wanted for shooting a Ceres police officer Wednesday morning, surrendered to authorities Friday after a brief shooutout during a standoff situation.

Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh said Jorge Mendoza, 25, was identified as the person responsible for shooting at police in Ceres Wednesday and fleeing the scene, leading police on an all-day manhunt.

On Friday, investigators went to Mendoza's house in the 5500 block of Geer Road in nearby Keyes, where they believed he was hiding. When officers approached the home, Mendoza came out shooting at officers. Multiple officers from different agencies returned gunfire, hitting Mendoza an unknown number of times, said Singh. Mendoza retreated back into the house then a short time later, called 911 to say he wanted to surrender to officers. Singh said after he surrendered, Mendoza was transported to a local hospital in Modesto for treatment.

TURLOCK - Gov. Jerry Brown’s department of finance has recommended that all $32 million of all the California county fairs funding be eliminated.

The proposed elimination of funding will reduce the income stream and job creation by an estimated 30 percent, resulting in a net loss to the state. This puts 29 California fairs at risk of closure.

However, the Stanislaus County Fair is not one of the 29 fairs at risk and will continue operating its fairgrounds as well as the Fair’s 10-day run event.

"This will have an impact on the Stanislaus County Fair, but our Fair has worked for many years to be a stable and fiscally established business," said Chris Borovansky, chief executive officer for the Stanislaus County Fair.

The Stanislaus County Avoid the 12 DUI Task Force will be deploying special roving DUI patrols in several communities throughout the area looking to stop and arrest drivers who are impaired. These DUI patrols are in addition to regularly scheduled patrol officers, all looking for the tale-tell signs of an intoxicated driver behind the wheel.
