Teen killed, 2 injured in Turlock crash

TURLOCK, Calif. - One person was killed and two others injured in a wreck between a Cadillac Escalade and a Nissan Sentra in a Turlock intersection at 8:57 p.m. on Tuesday.

Officer Mayra Lewis of the Turlock Police Department said a woman driving the Escalade westbound on W. Monte Vista Ave. and had a green light at the intersection of N. Walnut Rd. At the same time, the Sentra, traveling eastboundon W. Monte Vista Ave., turned left on a circular green light in the path of the Cadillac and was broadsided.

The 19-year-old man driving the car sustained non-life threatening injuries. A 23-year-old man in the front passenger seat sustained major, but non-life threatening injuries. Father of missing Navy SEAL honors son

ANGELS CAMP, CA - Local Navy SEAL Matthew Leathers disappeared off the coast of Hawaii during a training mission in February. His father told News10 one of the sacrifices the parents of Navy SEALs make is they can't always brag about their sons the way they might like.

Saturday night, Tim Leathers held to that duty for the most part, but he wanted to share just some of what those who knew Matthew best, loved most about the 33-year-old husband and father.

When the search for Matthew Leathers ended, his fellow Navy SEALs held a memorial service in Hawaii for the family, but it isn't easy letting go of hope.

"Matt's out there somewhere, sitting on a platform of flotsam, growing a beard, catching fish, looking around, going, well, I wonder when they'll find me," Tim Leathers said.

Leathers has always taken pride in his youngest son's achievements, as an ultra-endurance athlete, and as an elite warrior.

Turlock mom will face trial in daughter's death

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - A San Joaquin Valley mother will stand trial for the death of her 2-year-old daughter, who a pathologist testified had not been fed for several days before she was discovered.

Brandy Lee Rose Devine was arrested in July after police were called to her home in Turlock and found the little girl dead in her crib.

The Modesto Bee reports Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Dawna Reeves ruled Monday that there is evidence for Devine to stand trial for murder and willful cruelty to a child. The 25-year-old Devine also will stand trial on charges of using meth and an enhancement alleging that she inflicted great bodily injury on the child.

Devine is scheduled to be arraigned March 18. She pleaded not guilty to murder, child abuse and possession of methamphetamine in July.

Arson suspect claims she was set up in cheese factory fire

TURLOCK, CA - A fire at an abandoned cheese factory Tuesday night was not only arson, but attempted murder, Turlock police said.

When fire crews arrived at the scene on West Main and Tully streets around 7:19 p.m. Tuesday, they found the building engulfed in flames, Turlock police officer Mayra Lewis said.

Crews battled the fire for nearly two hours before getting it under control. Lewis said the fire started inside of the building and was considered suspicious.

On Wednesday, police arrested Lanette Sullivan, Wanda White and Erica Clardy for felony arson and attempted murder. Police said the three women, the male victim and several other homeless people were living in the factory. Police believe the victim got into an argument with one of the women, which turned into a fight with all three.

Sullivan, 46, said she is innocent during a jailhouse interview.

Oakdale memorial spawns neighbor dispute

OAKDALE, CA - People living near a woman in Oakdale who mourns her son with a display that keeps growing, said it's time for that memorial to be trimmed back.

The memorial was put together by Tammy Mazzariello to honor her son Ryan who died about a month ago in the Stanislaus County Jail.  He was in custody after being accused of two killings in November outside a small Oakdale market.

"It's a shrine to her son, who was arrested for murdering two kids in town, and who died in jail.   He didn't die at this house or live at this house, yet we have this shrine here," said Kevin Johnson.

Candles and photos were the first items on her front lawn, east of downtown Oakdale.  Then Sunday a large cross made of tree limbs was added.   That pushed neighbors over the edge, who confronted Mazzariello.  Their dispute brought police to the scene.

Farmers who allegedly left hens to starve charged

TURLOCK, Calif. (AP) - Animal welfare advocates are celebrating a decision by California prosecutors to charge two poultry farmers accused of leaving 50,000 hens to starve.

Andy Cheung and Lien Diep were arraigned on felony animal cruelty charges in Stanislaus County Superior Court on Monday. They face up to three years in prison and $20,000 in fines under California penal codes that make it a crime to deprive animals of food and water in a way that inflicts "needless suffering" or cruelty.

At the time animal welfare workers found the abandoned hens at A&L Poultry near Turlock a year ago, they said the birds had not been fed for two weeks.

More than 20,000 were already dead and 25,000 were euthanized. The remaining went to a sanctuary.

The defendants' attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
