Powerball fever hits Sacramento

SACRAMENTO -  Starting Monday morning at 6 a.m., Sacramentans will have a shot at winning massive Powerball jackpots.

Lottery sales help boost business for local store owners like Ken Lo of Lichine's Liquor and Deli, which has a bit of a reputation when it comes to winning tickets.

"It's the luckiest place in Sacramento!" said Lichine's owner, Ken Lo.

People flock to Lichine's for a chance to win big playing the lottery. More than a handful of people have bought winning lottery tickets there, with three mega-jackpot winners coming from the store since 2000.

"I think it's really going to help, because our customers really want this game, they've been waiting a long time for this game, that's all they hear is 'big jackpot,'" said Lo.

California Lottery officials say the state sees a benefit from adding Powerball.

7 home renovations that offer the biggest bang for your buck

7 home renovations that offer the biggest bang for your buck

SACRAMENTO - A resurgent housing market has people feeling confident about putting money into their homes once again.

According to CNN, home renovation spending in 2012 hit the highest level in six years. But many homeowners considering upgrades are uncertain of where to invest.

While renovating any area of the home adds interior or exterior appeal, some renovations carry more weight with prospective buyers than others.

Ruth Dubach, a Sacramento home renovation consultant for 14 years, highlights seven areas on which to focus your time and budget for the best chance of a return on your investment:

US home prices rose in February by most in 7 years

US home prices rose in February by most in 7 years

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. home prices jumped in February by the largest amount in seven years, evidence that the housing recovery strengthened ahead of the all-important spring-buying season.

Home prices rose 10.2 percent in February compared with a year earlier, the biggest annual gain since March 2006.

Prices have now increased on an annual basis for 12 straight months, underscoring the recovery's steady momentum.

The gains were broad-based. Prices rose in 47 of 50 states and in all but four of the nation's 100 largest metro areas. Delaware, Alabama and Illinois were the only states to report price declines.

A measure of national prices also rose 0.5 percent in February from January. That's a solid increase during the winter months, when sales typically slow.

Sierra snow survey: Water content 52 pct. of normal

Sierra snow survey: Water content 52 pct. of normal

SACRAMENTO, CA - At what would ideally be its peak content, the water content in the Sierra snowpack is just 52 percent of normal after a record dry January and March, according to the California Department of Water Resources.

DWR hydrologists went to select locations in the mountains to take manual water content readings to supplement electronic measurements.

Nearly one-third of Californians rely on snowmelt for their water, irrigation, agricultural and recreational needs.

On the positive side, November and December storms helped fill the Lake Oroville and Lake Shasta reservoirs. Lake Oroville is at 108 percent (83 percent of capacity) for the date and Shasta is 102 percent (82 percent of capacity).

Still, state and federal water managers have already determined water allocations to irrigation agency customers will be less than requested.

Startling facts on nutritional value of kids meals

Most kids' meals at the USA's top chain restaurants are still failing to make the grade when it comes to good nutrition, a new analysis finds.

Fried chicken fingers and nuggets, fries and soda are the most common items offered to children, and some kids meals contain more than 1,000 calories and are high in sodium and fat, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). The government's dietary guidelines recommend that children ages 4 to 10 eat 1,200 to 2,200 calories for the entire day.

"This is really disappointing," says Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy for CSPI. "Restaurants should be doing better."

The findings come after many restaurants have made some strides in offering healthier fare on kids' menus, including serving more fruit, vegetables and fat-free and low-fat milk.

Patterson man convicted of molestation

MODESTO, CA - A Patterson man who preyed on a young child  for nearly a year before he was caught, was convicted of multiple molestation charges, reports the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office.

Dallas Randolph White, 57, was found guilty by a Stanislaus County Superior Court jury on March 19 of sexual intercourse, oral copulation, sexual penetration with a foreign object, and lewd and lascivious acts with a child.

The crimes were committed on a child under the age of 10 between Aug. 1, 2010 and June 11, 2011, according to court documents.

With the verdict and White's previous conviction for robbery and two stints in prison, he faces up to 99 years in state prison when he is sentenced May 7, the D.A.'s office says.
