Stanislaus Culinary Arts Institute Announces Grand Opening/Open House | Food and Drink
Community members are invited to tour the new Stanislaus Culinary Arts Institute at their Grand Opening on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. (1040 Wakefield Drive, Oakdale). Operated by the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE), the Stanislaus Culinary Arts Institute opened this year to alternative education students, as well as to Oakdale and Waterford High School students enrolled through their Regional Occupational Programs (ROP). In addition, Columbia College is holding evening culinary classes at the campus beginning this fall.
“SCOE is committed to serving a wide range of students,” and Scott Kuykendall, Director of Career, Charter and Alternative Education. “This facility allows us to partner with local school districts, meet the needs of at-risk youth, and offer college courses to the community. It’s a win-win for the Oakdale community and area students.” According to Kuykendall, the culinary arts program integrates math and English language arts components in addition to teaching employability skills. The new school has an incredible amount of potential, he said. “Still underway is a state-of-the-art greenhouse that will be used to grow greens used in the culinary program and will allow for the creation of an agriculture career pathway.”
Whether looking for career opportunities or just wanting to learn to cook, students are enjoying the culinary classes. “I’m taking this class because I am looking into the restaurant business as a possible career, and also because I want to learn to cook,” said senior Lucas Filippini. Student Mike Nelson wants to be a cook when he graduates from school. “This class will help me learn what I need to get a good job,” he said.
