Baby gates are attached to the doorframes of the different offices at the SPCA.

“We all get to bring our dogs to work, which is really great,” SPCA Director of Public Relations Lesley Kirrene said. “It’s beneficial and it keeps you mellow, kinda keeps you down to earth … It’s a great place to work, it’s really a lot of fun.”

The SPCA is a local non-profit organization that took care of over 13,500 animals in 2010. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to the taking care of the animals, the SPCA holds different programs, organizes a spay and neuter clinic, places animals in homes and hosts multiple fundraising events throughout the year.

Kirrene’s job is to make sure the public knows about the SPCA’s different programs.

Turlock horses face slaughter despite law

TURLOCK, CA - Despite a California law banning the sale of horse meat for human consumption, a herd of horses in Turlock may wind up at a Mexican slaughter house.

Tracy Wheelock was excited when about 40 horses, including a mule and some mustangs, showed up in a Turlock pasture at Mitchell and Clayton Roads. She thought someone had rescued the animals.

But she learned the animals would soon face death when she talked to the property owner.

"The gentleman (said) these horses are headed to slaughter," Wheelock said. "Even though we've sold a few of them, we're going to put (the others) out to pasture so we can fatten them up."

It's a common practice around the U.S. according to Jennifer Fearing, the California Senior State Director of the Humane Society of the United States. She said hundreds of thousands of horses are shipped to slaughter houses in Mexico and Canada every year.

Bullet-proof vests for police dogs?

Bullet-proof vests for police dogs?

Thor, a police dog at the Antioch K-9 unit, received a bullet-proof vest on Tuesday along with the 3 other dogs.  K-9 Thor was shot by a suspect last summer and survived.

There are a new vest design that is custom-fit for each dog and allows them to move with greater freedom and mobility than the old-style bullet-proof vests.

Do you think the new vests will help our furry 4-legged officers?
